Mr. Fatimi attends the ITC meeting
Mr.
Syed
Suleiman Fatimi, Chief Executive Officer of the Export
Promotion Agency of Afghanistan (EPAA) attended the
forty-second annual meeting of the Joint Advisory Group
on the International Trade Centre (ITC) from 10th
to 11th December 2008 in Geneva.
The Joint Advisory Group meets formally once a year to
review the work of ITC on the basis of its Annual Report
and make recommendations to the UNCTAD Trade and
Development Board and the WTO General Council.
It is pertinent to mention that the EPAA won the
2008 World Trade Promotion Organisation Awards (LDC
Category)

Afghan Minister attended the International Conference on
Education

Heading a high ranking delegation H.E. Dr. Ghulam Farooq
Wardak, Minister of Education of the Islamic Republic of
Afghanistan participated at the forty-eight session of
the UNESCO International Education from 25-28 November
2008 in Geneva.
In his statement, H.E. Dr. Wardak highlighted
Afghanistan’s notable achievements in the education
sector in the last seven years and reiterated the
Government’s determination to achieve the Millennium
Development Goals by 2020, which means that all children
in Afghanistan, boys and girls alike will be able to
complete a full course of primary education.
At the outskirt of the conference, Minister Wardak
discussed avenues for expanding of bilateral relations
with a number of his counterparts, including Education
Ministers of Islamic Republic of Iran, India, China,
Tajikistan, Switzerland, France, Germany and Norway.
The International Conference on Education is one of the
most important meeting, in which more than 100 education
ministers from all continents attended the conference to
discuss ways to advance the goal of education for all.
The theme of this year’s conference was “Inclusive
Education: The Way of Future”.
It is worth mentioning that H.E. Mr. Zahir Aziz,
Afghanistan’s Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to
UNESCO and ISESCO also accompanied the delegation in
this visit.

38th Annual International Bazaar

The
United Nations Women's Guild's International Annual
Charity Bazaar 2008 took place at the Palais des Nations
on 25th November 2007.
Under the auspices of Afghanistan Ambassador’s wife,
Mrs. Tarzi, the stand of Afghanistan actively
participated in this year’s International Bazaar and its
multi-colored traditional Afghan jewelries, handcrafts,
clothes, rugs and posters, which reflected its rich
culture, made the Afghan stall vibrant and attractive to
hundreds of enthusiastic customers.
A significant amount of money raised from the sale will
go towards the UN Fund, which helps the poor children
who are suffering in different parts of the world.

Afghan
delegation attends 9th MSP

The 9th meeting of the state parties to the
anti-personal mine ban convention was held from 24th
to 28th of November 2008 in Geneva. This
five-day meeting was attended by Mrs. Suraya Paikan,
Deputy Minister for Martyrs and Disabled Affairs of the
Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled
of Afghanistan as the representative of mine victims,
and as for mine clearance Dr. Abdul Matin Adrak, head of
the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority.
Under the mine clearance obligation of Article 5 of the
aforementioned convention, Dr. Adrak provided an update
of Afghanistan’s achievement on matters concerning mine
clearance and challenges that lay ahead.
Mrs. Suraya Paikan also addressed the meeting and
highlighted some major steps that her Ministry had taken
in expediting the development of victim assistance
progarmme.
It is pertinent to mention that Dr. Mohammad Haider
Reza, Director of the United Nations Mine Action Centre
for Afghanistan and representative of other relevant
agencies and civil society of Afghanistan also
participated in the aforementioned meeting.

Study visit to WIPO

A High-level Afghan delegation attended a three –day
study visit to the WIPO headquarter from 18th
to 20th of November 2008. The delegation was
comprised of Dr. Adib Farhadi, Deputy Minister of
Commerce and Industry, Mr. Azim Husseini, Advisor to the
Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Head of IP Board
and Mr.Najib Manalai, Advisor to the Ministry of
Information and Culture of Afghanistan.
The objective of this study visit was to provide an
opportunity for the policy makers of Afghanistan to
enhance their awareness and knowledge of operations and
benefits of WIPO system and acquaint them with
activities of WIPO on some issues of particular
importance to Afghanistan.
On the final day of the study visit, the delegation met
with the new Director General of WIPO, Dr.
Francis Gurry and
discussed issues of mutual of concern and interest.
Head of the delegation also held a number of bilateral
meetings with senior officials of UNCTAD, WTO and ITC on
the sideline of this visit, where he called for further
enhanced cooperation and assistant in fields of trade,
export promotion and capacity building programme for
Afghanistan.

WTO Study Visit for Afghan officials
From 10th to 20th of November
2008, the Government of Turkey through its Permanent
Mission to the WTO sponsored and organized a ten-day WTO
study visit for officials of the Ministries of Commerce
and Industry and Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan in
Ankara and Geneva.
Intensive tailor-made programs and lectures by experts
exposed the delegation to the activities of WTO and
enhance their awareness and knowledge of the World Trade
Organization’s rules and functioning of the
Organization. The Afghan delegation also accompanied
officials of the Permanent Mission of Turkey to the WTO
in numerous WTO meetings, in order to learn from their
experience of working with WTO.

international pour l’exploitation du minerai de
Chromates en Afghanistan. L’estimation de
l’exploitation est de 10 ans. Ce minerai riche
en cristaux de Chrome est situé au lieu dit

de Nangarhar.

Afghan delegation attends 119th Assembly of
the IPU


H.E. Mr. Mirwais Yasini, Deputy Speaker of
the Wolesi Jirga (House of Representatives of
Afghanistan Parliament), headed a high-ranking Afghan
parliamentary delegation from both houses to the 119th
Assembly of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) in
Geneva from 13th to 15th of
October 2008.
On the sideline of the Assembly,
the delegation met with their counterparts and discussed
issues of mutual interest and concern. They also
attended a number of key side events and committees.
At this year’s IPU Assembly,
legislators from over 130 countries touched upon a
number of important issues and adopted an emergency item
entitled ‘the role of parliaments in containing the
global financial crisis and its economic impact both on
developing and developed countries’.

UNHCR's 59th
ExCom

An Afghan delegation headed by H.E. Sher Mohammad
Etebari, Minister of Repatriation and Refugees,
participated in the fifty-ninth session of the Executive
Committee of the High Commissioner’s Programme (EXCOM)
which was held from 6th to 10th of
October 2008, in Geneva.
On the second of the session, Minister Etebari addressed
the Executive Committee meeting and underlined the
government’s achievements and challenges with regard to
five million Afghan refugees whom have returned home in
recent years.
In his statement, H.E. Mr. Sher Mohammad Etebari shed
light upon the forthcoming ‘Kabul International
Conference on Return and Reintegration‘, which is
scheduled to take place on the 19th of
November 2008 and will be co-chaired by the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan and the UNHCR. He then
expressed Afghanistan’s gratitude to the UNHCR,
International NGOs for their timely support to the
voluntary repatriation and reintegration programmes and
the Islamic Republic of Iran and Pakistan for their
generosity towards Afghan refugees over so many years.
On the sideline of the session, a full day meeting
took place where the Afghan delegation discussed the
preparation of Kabul Conference with H.E. Boudewijn J.
Vaneenennaam, Permanent Representative of the
Netherlands (Chairperson of ExCom), the UN High
Commissioner for Refugees, the Minister for States and
Frontier Regions of Pakistan and the Deputy Interior
Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The Afghan Minister also had a number of bilateral
meetings with his counterparts and other officials at
the 59th ExCom session.
