Afghanistan High Level Delegates Participate in the 130th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union

The 130th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly was convened in Geneva from 16th to 20th March 2014 with around 1,450 participants comprising of 726 parliamentarians from 140 parliaments, including over 50 speakers and 223 MPs to discuss developments in the cooperation among the parliaments of the world, strengthen peace and stability, realization and development of democracy, promotion of women’s role in decision making and United Nation’s stance in resolving the international issues.
Afghanistan high level delegation composed of both Upper and Lower houses led by Mr. Sayed Faroukh Shah Janab, played a magnificent role in showing their capacity in obtaining membership in several committees. Ms. Farkhunda Zahra Naderi was elected as the President of third standing committee on Democracy and Human Rights, Ms. Shukria Barekzai gained the member of the standing committee on Peace and International Security and Ms. Hela Ershad joint the co-ordinating committee of Women Parliamentarian of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
The High level delegation of Afghanistan a day before their departure back to Afghanistan, visited the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Geneva and in addition to meeting the mission members, awarded H.E Dr. Nanguyalai Tarzi an appreciation letter for his commitment to work, and his excellent leadership during the 130th Session of the IPU.

On 25th March 2014, at the Palais des Nations, The Permanent Missions of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Republic of Azerbaijan, Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Republic of Tajikistan, Republic of Turkey, Turkmenistan and Republic of Uzbekistan celebrated the International Day of Nowruz.
Nowruz as a spring festival is celebrated by over 300 million people around the World as the embodiment of the unity of cultural heritage and centuries-long tradition. The celebration of Nowruz at the United Nations Office is a remarkable opportunity for countries to further strengthen the ties among people based on mutual respect, peace and good neighborhood. Nowruz is recognized by the United Nations General Assembly (A/Res/64/253) and is included on the UNESCO list of Intangible
The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan brought the real spirit of the spring through a colorful presentation with tulip flowers and by serving variety of Afghanistan traditional food. Afghanistan table attracted all the observers’ attention and hosted a larger number of the guests.
In an inaugural remark the Director General of the UNOG and Permanent Representative of Iran to the UNOG who functioned as the co-coordinator of the event, both with their inspiring words presented their Nowruz greetings and welcomed everyone to the event.
